Growing up, I always thought family was supposed to be a source of love and support. But for me, it was different. My family and extended family were like a storm of emotional abuse. It felt like walking on eggshells all the time, never knowing when the next outburst would come.
They were emotionally immature, unable to handle their own feelings, let alone mine. It led to trauma, scars that ran deep within me. I felt like I was drowning in their toxicity, suffocating under their expectations and criticisms.
But amidst the darkness, there was a glimmer of hope. I found a lifeline in therapy. It was a safe space where I could unravel the knots of my past and make sense of the chaos. My therapist helped me see that I wasn't alone and that healing was possible, even when it felt impossible.
But therapy wasn't the only thing that saved me. I found solace in supportive friends who became my chosen family. They were the ones who held my hand through the darkest nights and reminded me of my worth when I couldn't see it myself.
Slowly but surely, I began to cope with the pain. I realized that I deserved better than the toxic environment I grew up in. So, I made the difficult decision to distance myself from my family. It wasn't easy, but it was necessary for my own well-being.
Now, I'm on a journey of self-discovery and healing. I'm learning to love and nurture myself in ways my family never could. And while the scars of my past may always be a part of me, they no longer define me. I'm stronger, braver, and more resilient than I ever thought possible. And for that, I am grateful.
